1.Thingyan Festival (Water Festival)

Myanmar Thingyan festival (also called the water festival) is also held in neighboring countries; Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Myanmar people believe that water festival washes away sins and this festival is held to welcome the New Year. This is the most famous festival in Myanmar. People around the country play traditional games and some make donations: they offer free foods and drinks for everyone in the town.

2.Thadingyut Festival

Thadingyut Festival is the three days of lights festival; the day before full moon, the full moon day and the day after the full moon day. People celebrate the anniversary of Buddha’s return from the celestial abode where he had spent the lent teaching the celestials about his law including the mother of Buddha. On the full moon day of Thadigyut, Buddha descended to the abode of humans. People on earth illuminated the homes and the streets to welcome Buddha and his disciples.


3.Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival

Fire Balloon Festival is held in Taunggyi, the capital of the Southern Shan State. This festival is called hot-air balloon festival and it is annually held by Pa O ethnic group. On the featival nights, people hold firework-launching competitions as well as rugby ball-shaped hot balloons competitions. There are also day balloons which are in the form of pagodas and animals such as dragons, ducks and elephants.

4.Kayin New Year Festival

During Kayin New Year Festival Day, celebrants wear traditional Kayin costumes and many young and old Kayin people wear their traditional colourful dresses and visit their relatives and enjoy the festival together. Dance competitions are annually held in Hpa An, the capital of Kayin State.

5.Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival

Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda is annually held by rowing Buddha images around the Inle Lake in a colourful barge. It is usually held for 18 days (October to September). Four Buddha images out of five from Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda ar carried on royal barge and conveyed around 14 villages. The barge is towed by the boats of leg-rowers and hundreds of boats follow its way. It is one of the amazing festival in Myanmar.

6.Yellow Robe Weaving Festival

During Yellow Robe Weaving Festival (also called Tazaungmon Festival), people offer yellow robes to the monks. The offering Kahtein Thingan (Kahtein robe) is usually a big affair for Myanamr people and this festival is the most well-known one in Tazaungmone.
